A SCOTTISH performing arts college has closed suddenly, leaving students “in the dark” over their future studies.
The Scottish Institute of Theatre, Dance, Film and Television, based in Livingston, has closed its doors immediately after calling in liquidators, The Scotsman has reported.
The institution has been training actors, dancers, and musical theatre performers for two decades.
Around 20 staff members have reportedly lost their jobs following the school’s closure, with all students having also been affected.
It has been reported that staff were told about the future of the school and have been told their wages would be paid late.
Staff collected their personal belongings at the building on Thursday, according to reports.
Founded in 2005 the institute began life as a full-time school called The MGA Academy of Performing Arts and went on to offer a number of degrees ranging from bachelor's to masters in fields including theatre acting, film and television, dance, and performance.
The school’s website now directs to the liquidator’s statement, with the notice also posted on their social media channels.
Katie McClachan, insolvency practitioner from Middlebrooks Business Recovery and Advice in Edinburgh, has been appointed as interim liquidator.
A statement read: “As a result, the company has ceased to trade with immediate effect.
“The priority at this time is supporting the employees and students who have been displaced as a result of the liquidation.”
It comes following a petition to wind up was presented to the Sheriff Court at Livingston on March 28, 2025, and granted on May 6.
One parent wrote on social media: “The Scottish Institute of Theatre, Dance, Film and Television has closed today after going into liquidation leaving many students in the dark about their studies.
“Does any one know who we should speak to? There has been no warnings or correspondence from them to advise the students on what they should do! Absolutely disgraceful way to treat young talented people who only want to learn and perform and make a career.”
Another parent said: “Clarity around current students needs to be provided asap. As a parent of a final year student handing in their dissertation we need to know that they will all be getting their degrees.”
Following the news of the Scottish Institute of Theatre, Dance, Film and Television closure Nardone's Academy of Performing Arts said they are extending their applications for the students affected.
The institute, which runs similar courses, said it would fast-track students to ensure they have an education to go to in September.
