All-Ireland winning Tipperary hurler Tom Larkin dies

Former Tipperary All-Ireland winner Tom Larkin has died.

The deceased was centre-forward on the Premier team that beat Galway in the 1958 final to clinch their 17th title, ending a seven-year wait for the Liam MacCarthy Cup.

He also won a National League title the following year but a broken leg sustained in the subsequent St Brendan’s Cup game against New York stalled his career, though he did win an All-Ireland intermediate hurling title with Tippery in 1963, the county’s first victory at that grade.

Larkin was also a noted footballer and represented the county at senior level for a number of years also.

As a coach, he made a rich contribution to his club Kilsheelan-Kilcash too, steering them to senior football county titles in 1968 and ‘72 as well as having a hand in successes in intermediate hurling and junior football.

He is revered in the locality having been the first All-Ireland senior medalist from the club.

"His homecoming as an All-Ireland medal winner to his native parish was one of the greatest events the parish has ever seen and the celebration that took place is part of the folklore of the area," said the Kilsheelan-Kilcash  club in a statement posted on Facebook.

"Tom was a star at club level in every sense of the word. His role as team trainer with many club teams over the years was highly successful. His contribution as a team trainer was recognised and hugely appreciated by all the players of that era."
