All-Ireland winner Aidan Harte announces Galway retirement

All-Ireland winner Aidan Harte has announced his retirement from Galway on Friday.

Harte was first called up to the Galway senior panel at the end of 2007 and became a mainstay in the side in the 2010s and started in the 2017 All-Ireland final in which Galway beat Waterford to hoist the Liam MacCarthy Cup.

Harte retires with three Leinster titles as well as three National Leagues and an All-Ireland medal.

And in a statement, Harte said: "It has been an honour and privilege to represent Galway at Senior level for 13 seasons.

"This is something I never took for granted. Unfortunately, it has also taken its toll on the body and therefore the time has come for me to turn the page.

"Being in a position to share the field with and against some of the greatest players to ever play the game along with getting the chance to showcase our sport worldwide has provided me with memories I will forever cherish and making many great friends during those times.

"The Galway supporters have always been phenomenal, making huge sacrifices to support us on our journey. Now I look forward to being one again, willing on the current management team and players to every success in 2022 and beyond. "

Galway will enter 2022 with Henry Shefflin at the helm but will be without Joe Canning, who also stepped away from inter-county duty.
