All-Ireland medal stolen from Meath GAA legend Martin O'Connell

Gardai are investigating after an All-Ireland medal belonging to Meath Gaelic football legend Martin O'Connell was stolen from his parents' home.

The 1987 winning medal was stolen from the property in Staholmog near Kells, Co Meath and was among a number of items thieved. O'Connell had gifted the medal to his mother as a birthday present before it was stolen.

The house was broken into on Tuesday evening between the times of 6:30pm and 7:30pm.

Two other properties in the same area were also broken into around the same time, although nothing was stolen from either of those houses.

O'Connell is an icon of Meath GAA as a three-time All-Ireland winner who was also named on the GAA's Team of the Millenium.

An antique wedding ring and a Golden Jubilee commemoration medal were also stolen in the burglary.

O'Connell told LMFM Radio: "The medal was down there because I actually gave it to my mother for a birthday present maybe 20-odd years ago.

"I put a gold chain on it and she'd wear it to different functions and she kept it as pride and joy...that's how it ended up at the house, and it went missing along with a few other things.

"A wedding ring was missing and there was a jubilee medal given to us by Fr Adams, a parish priest down here years ago as well, so special things, and things valuable to the family more than anybody else really."

O'Connell explained on the RTE Six One news that he grew up dreaming of winning an All-Ireland with his county and added that his mother is upset by the loss.
