All-India sub-junior ranking badminton tournament canceled after 3 test positive

HYDERABAD: Domestic badminton was hit by the surging Covid-19 situation in the country.

The 1st Ashwani Gupta Memorial All-India Sub-Junior Ranking Badminton Tournament at the Tau Devi Lal Sports Complex, Panchkula has been canceled after three players tested positive for Covid-19.

"Even before we had completed the qualifying rounds, three players tested positive for Covid. We have decided to cancel the tournament as most of the players are not vaccinated," a BAI official told TOI, adding that the status of other domestic badminton tournaments is uncertain.

BAI had recently resumed the domestic circuit after suspending the calendar in March, 2020.

Meanwhile, the Jwala Gutta Badminton Academy has been closed for a week after three players tested positive.

All three are inmates of the academy. While there are around 80 players, almost half of them are playing in different tournaments. Thankfully, none of the other players tested positive.
