Once upon a time, 15 years ago, CSI was the wonder of US TV ratings, the body bag of a show that launched trolleyloads of mortuary melodrama. Now it’s gone, interred in the late-night world of endless reruns. Then came The Mentalist, relying on intuition rather than forensic science, and lasting only seven seasons. But, in this age of TV life and TV death, one cutting edge never seems to grow blunt: The Simpsons has just been renewed for series 27 and 28. It may be losing Harry Shearer, the voice behind 20 or so characters, but late nights will have to wait a little longer.
