All golf clubs in Republic of Ireland ordered to shut during Level 5 lockdown

Ireland’s two golf governing bodies, the GUI (Golfing Union of Ireland) and the ILGU (Irish Ladies Golfing Union) have ordered every golf club in the Republic of Ireland to close down.

The two bodies have issued a joint statement.

In it they confirmed the news revealed exclusively on irishmirror.ie earlier today.

The spokesman said that after “intensive engagement” with Sport Ireland, that “regrettably” they are ordering all of their member clubs to close for the full duration of the Level 5 lockdown, six weeks.

A spokesman told the Irish Mirror: “Following intensive engagement over the past 48 hours, we have been informed this afternoon by Sport Ireland that, very regrettably golf clubs must close under the new level 5 restrictions.

“Essential course maintenance is permitted to continue under level 5.

“We have sought clarity on the issue as to whether ranges/practice facilities can remain open for exempted activities.

“We will update clubs on this as soon as possible.”
