All four areas of the Bristol region have reported an increase in coronavirus cases

All four areas across the Bristol region reported a rise in coronavirus cases today (Sunday).

According to the latest figures by Public Health England, a further 11 patients were diagnosed with the virus in Bristol, taking the total to 1,556.

In North Somerset, eight more were recorded, taking the area's total up to 978, while five patients tested positive for the virus in South Gloucestershire, which now has 863 cases.

Bath and North East Somerset reported three more cases, the total there is 429.

UK-wide there were 2,988 new cases were confirmed in a single day, bringing the nation's total to 347,152.

Covid deaths

Neither of Bristol's hospital trusts have recorded a new death over the past 24 hours, where deaths remain at 271.

Southmead Hospital reported a coronavirus-related death on Tuesday August 25, which was the first in the city for two months.

Nationally, two further Covid-related deaths were recorded, bringing the UK's total to 41,551.

Meanwhile, Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab said Labour’s call for more airport testing was not a “silver bullet”.

Mr Raab told BBC One’s Andrew Marr Show: “Let’s just be clear about this when we think about airports – there is no silver bullet in airports.

“The current data suggests that the success rate of positively identifying people with Covid with a test in the airport is less than 10%.”

Put to him that those numbers increase if passengers are then tested again seven days later, Mr Raab said: “There is no silver bullet in the airport alone and that’s why we have the quarantine.

“So, the direction of travel will be making sure we have the capacity and the ability for when the time is right to ease up on the self-isolation at home, and that’s certainly something that we’ll be looking at.

“But we couldn’t – and I think Labour have got themselves into a terrible muddle on this – the idea that one test in an airport could resolve the quarantine issues … we couldn’t safely do that.

“We’re not going to let up on a measure which is crucial for keeping the virus under control.”
