'All eyes on Watford' Swansea City legend Ashley Williams says Cardiff City defeat was a 'blip' and top two is still very much on

Ashley Williams believes Swansea City remain firmly in the hunt for automatic promotion despite losing back-to-back Championship matches for the first time this season last week.

The Swans currently sit six points behind second placed Watford after being beaten 1-0 by Cardiff City just four days after losing 3-0 at Bournemouth.

However, they boast a game in hand over the Hornets who play six sides currently in the top 10 in their final eight games of the 2020/21 campaign.

And Swans legend Williams believes his former club's final two results before the international break were merely a "blip" in what has otherwise been an "excellent" season.

"A disappointing result from a Swansea perspective," he told BBC Radio Wales.

"To be fair, to give credit to Mick McCarthy and Cardiff, they've done really well since he's come in. I'm pleased for them, coming back to the point of supporting all Welsh teams. We all know that I'm Swansea through and through, but fair play to Cardiff.

"But Swansea have had a great season. I've been watching them closely and I think they're doing really well. It's a blip.

"It's a game lost, it's three points lost, but you go again. Swansea didn't get the points, but they'll have to dust themselves off and go again.

"The season as a whole when you look at the bigger picture, it's been an excellent season. They're in a great position to attack those top two places, so all is not lost."

With Watford still needing to play the likes of Norwich City, Brentford and Reading before rounding off their campaign against Swansea at Vicarage Road, the chase for second spot remains an open one.

And former Wales international Williams believes Swansea will not dwell on their loss to local rivals Cardiff as they bid to overhaul Watford over the course of the coming weeks.

"They've got the game in hand. I agree, I think Norwich are gone. I think all eyes should be on Watford, and, with the game in hand, you're looking for a slip up which in the Championship can happen at any point at all. You just handle your business," he added.

"Steve Cooper's done an excellent job down there this season. He'll have the boys ready and he won't get sucked up into the disappointment of the Cardiff game so much.

"I really would love to see them at least finish second and get automatic promotion."

Swansea return to action against Birmingham City at St Andrew's on Friday, April 2.
