'All depends' - Nottingham Forest loanee's transfer situation explained amid flying form

Defender Max Lowe has quickly made an impact since signing for Nottingham Forest in the summer.

The Sheffield United loanee has cemented his place in the team, with the wing-back role particularly important in new boss Steve Cooper’s 3-4-3 system.

Lowe has made six appearances so far, and netted his first goal for the Reds in Cooper’s first match in charge - securing a 1-1 draw at home to Millwall.

It is the kind of form which has left many Forest fans expressing a wish for the 24-year-old - along with some of the other loan players - to eventually make the move to the City Ground on a permanent basis.

It is understood Lowe’s deal does not include an option for the Reds to buy him. And, as with most loans, there is believed to be a clause for his parent side to recall him in January.

But YorkshireLive’s Sheffield United reporter, Nathan Hemmingham, believes it is unlikely the Blades would bring him back early. And he says - if circumstances align - they might be prepared to let him go at the end of the campaign.

We got the lowdown on Lowe’s situation.

Max Lowe has made a great start on loan at Forest, how is he viewed at United?

He’s not managed to make much of an impact, to be fair, and was deemed surplus to requirements at the start of the season under Slavisa Jokanovic.

He came in last summer as part of a double deal with Jayden Bogle from Derby but struggled at Premier League level, as all players did last season. It was a tough campaign and United were all out of form.

Unfortunately for Max, he's not had chance to show what he can do at Championship level because United are well stocked in that department.

Republic of Ireland international Enda Stevens is seen as the number one choice, and it was between Max and Rhys Norrington-Davies really as to who stayed and who went out.

Ben Osborn, a player Forest fans will know well, can also play that role.

And with Rhys becoming a Wales international and being part of their squad at the Euros in the summer, following a season out on loan in the Champ, it would have been tough on him to not be given a chance after such a good season.

That meant it was Max who got the nod to go out and play.

Does it look like he has a long-term future at Bramall Lane?

Hard to say at the minute. I would not suggest the door is shut just yet.

Enda turns 32 before the start of next season, and Rhys still looks like he has a lot of learning to do.

I would say United still need to improve in this department in the future. And if Max rips it up at the City Ground he could well stand a chance of coming back and earning a place, particularly if United fail to gain promotion back to the Premier League.

If they do get promoted, I wonder if that could go against him, though, as United may need to bring in someone at that level.

Plenty of Forest fans would love to see him sign permanently, do you think that could be a possibility?

Yes, it all depends on circumstances - what league United are in, the form of Enda and Rhys, and how Max goes on at Forest.

But if Max cannot force his way back into Slavisa's plans, United have plenty in that department and will not want to carry players, then I'm sure he'll be allowed to move on.

With United having a recall option in January, do you think that’s something they would likely consider using?

I would be surprised. I'd imagine only a long-term injury to Rhys or Enda would do that.

I think the idea is he goes out and plays, gets plenty of games under his belt, having been a bit-part player since joining.
