As Kylian Mbappe said this week, Liverpool are “a machine” and “they win, they win, they win” – but how many Reds stars of yesteryear would get into Jurgen Klopp's side?
Many Kopites – even those old enough to recall the glory days of the 1970s and 80s – now consider the current crop to be the best team in the club's illustrious history and the records this season back up such claims.
Liverpool have now won 22 of their 23 Premier League games so far, with their latest victory, 2-1 at Wolves, restoring their 16 point cushion at the summit with a game in hand on nearest challengers and defending champions Manchester City.
While taking in the action at Molineux, a trio of former Red men were all quizzed by BT Sport host Jake Humphrey as to whether they would get into Klopp's starting XI.
Their answers perhaps were telling, not only about their respective abilities but also their personalities.
When asked if he would get into the team, former Liverpool captain Paul Ince, who as a player gave himself the nickname 'The Guv'nor' and crossed the great divide from Old Trafford to Anfield – via a stint in Italy with Internazionale – said: “All day long! Yeah I do, without a doubt, for sure.”
Joe Cole, who arrived at Liverpool on a Bosman-style free transfer in 2010, said: “I don’t know.”
Peter Crouch, a striker who took 19 games to grab his first Liverpool goal but became a fans' favourite at Anfield, said: “I’d be in the Origi role, last 10-15.
“I wasn’t bad in my day but I wouldn’t get in this team. Not with Mane, Salah, Firmino, no chance. But I’d play a part, and I’d love to play a part.”
