All day centres for people with disabilities in Nottingham under review ahead of closure

Day centres in Nottingham will all be placed under review, before one is closed, the council has said.

The move is part of an initial package of cuts, including redundancies and playground closures, designed to save Nottingham City Council £12.5 million this year.

The cost of the pandemic for the council is estimated to be £87.9 million by April next year, but the authority has so far received £23.5 million from the Government.

A council report on the cuts says there will be a: “Review and consolidation of day services for citizens with physical, sensory and learning disabilities, including the closure of one day centre.”

It continues, saying the council will: “Review sufficiency of day services and following consultation, ensure an appropriate offer for all citizens currently accessing day services."

The same council report finds this will save £52,000 this year.

It is one of nine cuts to adult social care, including a: “Staffing review across assessment and provision to deliver efficiencies.”

Speaking yesterday (Tuesday, July 21) the city council’s finance chief, Councillor Sam Webster, said: “What we’re consulting on today is a review of our day centre provision.

“There isn’t a decision as to how that will play out.”

The council runs day services from a number of centres in the city, including: The Indian Community Centre in Carrington; the Marcus Garvey Centre; The Pakistan Centre; Evergreen Day Service in Mapperley; Martin Jackman Centre in Aspley; Summerwood Day Service in Clifton; Acorn Resource Centre in Hyson Green; Albany House in St Ann’s and the Willows Day Centre in Beechdale.
