All changes expected in Irish schools as Cabinet meet to discuss further Covid restrictions

Cabinet is set to meet on Monday to discuss the introduction of further restrictions in schools.

Government leaders will meet with NPHET following ongoing talks over the weekend as concern grows about the spread of the new Omicron variant.

The government are expected to approve recommendations proposed by NPHET last week, to ban Christmas plays, communions, indoor playdates, sleepovers and birthday parties.

The measures will be implemented to cut transmission rates before Christmas.

The Cabinet is also expected to come to a decision on whether or not children will be asked to wear face masks in primary schools.

NPHET has recommended that children aged nine and over should wear masks in indoor settings.

However, the recommendation has been met with backlash from some parents.

The Children's Rights Alliance has said members are concerned that wearing masks will interfere with their child's wellbeing, particularly those with learning difficulties, health issues, or autism.

Minister of State for Disability Anne Rabbitte has said she would raise parents' concerns.

In a tweet, she said: "It's so important to consider how any potential mask wearing regulation will impact children with additional needs.

"For some, it just won't be possible for a number of reasons & we all need to bear this in mind. I will continue to raise this with my Cabinet colleagues."

The news comes after the Department of Health reported a further 3,735 Covid cases on Sunday, with 566 people being treated in hospital, 117 of whom are in ICU.

The government has said its focus remains on reducing the number of infections in children aged 5 to 11.

Antigen tests have also been introduced for children in primary school.

If a child is confirmed as a close contact of a positive Covid case within their school pod, they will be offered free antigen tests.

Antigen testing will be offered to the full class if there are two or more confirmed cases of Covid-19 outside a single pod in a seven day period.

This is expected to be in place on or before 29 November 2021.

The school principal will inform parents if their child is a close contact and will help them to order free antigen tests from the distribution company. Parents will then receive the antigen tests by post.
