All Blacks legend's mother dies in 'freak accident'

Police and health and safety chiefs are investigating the 'freak' death of former All Black Andrew Hore's mother.

Hore's father Jim was shutting a gate on their farm in Central Otago when his wife Sue fell off the motorbike and died instantly.

He told stuff.co.nz:   "She just fell out of the bike, I don't know whether she took a turn or not, (there were) no words or anything.

"She didn't even move, didn't even make a noise ... she just died instantly.

"I had poor cellphone coverage, I didn't want to leave her lying by herself so I just battled it out."

Jim Hore said it was unclear what caused his wife's death, with the family waiting for autopsy results.

The motorbike was stationary at the time of the incident, he said.

"It was just a freak bloody accident."

The last few days had been "terrible", he said.

"The biggest thing about it is she's not an invalid in a wheelchair, I couldn't put up with that and neither could she."

Police and WorkSafe NZ are making inquiries into her death.

Andrew Hore made 83 appearances for the All Blacks taking in their 2007 and '11 World Cup campaigns.

Hore was second-choice to Keven Mealamu for the 2011 tournament but did make seven appearances during the competition, including two starts, as the All Blacks completed their mission of regaining the World Cup after 24 years.

The dogged hooker made his debut against England in 2002 and 11 years later played his final Test against Ireland on New Zealand's autumn tour.
