All aboard Vigil! BBC confirms release date for new thriller from makers of Line of Duty

Here’s something to fill the AC-12 shaped void in your viewing schedule. Months after the first trailer aired following Line of Duty’s series six finale back in May, the BBC has finally confirmed a release date for new thriller Vigil.

The first two episodes of the six-part drama from World Productions, the makers of LoD and Bodyguard, are set to air over the bank holiday on Sunday, August 29 and Monday, August 30 on BBC One and iPlayer, with future instalments then landing on Sunday nights.

Suranne Jones stars Detective Chief Inspector Amy Silva, the officer leading the investigation into a suspicious death onboard a Trident nuclear submarine. It’s a contentious inquiry, and becomes yet more fraught as the crew starts to close ranks and another threat emerges. We’re feeling claustrophobic already.

Steve Ar - sorry, Martin Compston is among the starry cast (BBC)

The cast list reads like a who’s who of British drama, with Martin Compston (aka AC-12’s most devoted waistcoat wearer, Steve Arnott) joined by Game of Thrones’ Rose Leslie, Endeavour’s Shaun Evans and Peep Show’s Paterson Joseph (side note: can you imagine anything worse than getting stuck on a submarine with Alan Johnson?).

The series is created by Tom Edge, who previously adapted the Strike novels for the BBC. It’s not World Production’s only buzzy upcoming project, either. Showtrial, which follows the twists and turns of a high-profile legal case concerning a wealthy student charged with conspiracy to murder, is slated to air on BBC One later this year.
