All aboard the night train: Calls grow for European sleeper services

TALKING EUROPE © FRANCE 24

It's one of the most evocative forms of travel: the night train. And for many climate activists in Europe, sleeper services could be a fast track to reducing carbon emissions. 2021 has been designated "European Year of Rail" - 12 months intended to promote train travel in all its forms as a sustainable and innovative mode of transport.

Supporters point to trains' vastly lower carbon emissions than equivalent plane journeys, but others fear that if flying is made more expensive, citizens' mobility could take a hit.

We debate these issues with two members of the European Parliament's Transport and Tourism committee.

Produced by Perrine Desplats, Isabelle Romero, Céline Schmitt and Mathilde Bénézet.

In partnership with the European Parliament.
