All 5 times Trent Baalke made a midseason trade as GM

The Jacksonville Jaguars are 5-2 and have one more game before the Oct. 31 trade deadline.

Clearly, the Jaguars view themselves as a legitimate contender with hopes of their first ever Super Bowl appearance. But does that mean Jacksonville is content with the current state of its roster, or does it mean the team will want to make a stronger push by acquiring another player or two?

The Philadelphia Eagles already went with the latter strategy by sending two draft picks and a player to the Tennessee Titans for two-time All-Pro safety Kevin Byard.

To figure out if the Jaguars are a team likely to do the same, it’s informative to look into Trent Baalke’s past as a general manager. In two previous seasons with Jacksonville and six years running the San Francisco 49ers, he’s made just five trades between the start of the regular season and the trade deadline. Here’s all of them:

Jaguars acquire WR Calvin Ridley from the Falcons (2022)

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

It didn’t impact the 2022 season because Ridley was suspended at the time of the deal, but the deadline trade to acquire a top receiver from the Falcons has certainly impacted the Jaguars in 2023. Atlanta will get a yet-to-be-determined draft pick in 2024 for Ridley.

Jaguars trade RB James Robinson to the Jets (2022)

Vincent Carchietta-USA TODAY Sports

While he was breakout star for the Jaguars in 2020, an Achilles tear ended Robinson’s 2021 season. With the emergence of Travis Etienne Jr., Robinson’s role was shrinking in Jacksonville and he was sent to the Jets in 2022 for a sixth-round pick that was used to select receiver Parker Washington.

Jaguars trade CB C.J. Henderson to the Panthers (2021)

Reinhold Matay-USA TODAY Sports

The Jaguars wasted no time hitting the eject button on their 2020 top 10 pick. Henderson was dealt to the Panthers early in his second season for tight end Dan Arnold and a swap of draft picks. The third-round pick Jacksonville got in the deal was used to select linebacker Chad Muma.

49ers trade TE Vernon Davis to Broncos (2015)

Ron Chenoy-USA TODAY Sports

Davis was in his 10th season with the 49ers when he was sent to the Broncos in 2015 for late-round draft picks. San Francisco was 2-6 at the time of the deal and sent the veteran tight end to a Denver team that won the Super Bowl.

49ers swap G Nick Easton for Vikings LB Gerald Hodges (2015)

Gary A. Vasquez-USA TODAY Sports

Hodges started 16 games in the year-and-a-half after he was acquired by the 49ers. Easton was an undrafted rookie at the time who started 17 games with the Vikings.
