Riot Games originally intended to release League of Legends with just 20 unique champions, but eventually doubled that number leading up to launch day on Oct. 27, 2009. Now, 16 years later, there are a whopping 171 playable characters in the game.
Yunara, a marksman who learned the tricks of the trade after spending centuries in the spirit realm, is the newest member of the League family, having arrived in mid-2025. Before her release, Mel Medarda, a Piltover councilor and mage from Arcane, made her debut.
Mel Medarda was preceded by Ambessa, the Matriarch of War (champ 169) and Aurora, the Witch Between Worlds (champ 168), in November 2024 and July 2024.
When I first played League in season one, I never imagined the champion roster would reach 100, let alone 171 (I was a Poppy one-trick pony, by the way). This just goes to show the longevity of the game throughout the years. Despite its ups and downs, it’s still going strong over a decade later, bringing in millions of players every month.
