Alisson suspended for Merseyside derby after red card in Liverpool clash with Brighton

Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson will miss the Merseyside derby after his red card against Brighton .

The Brazilian was shown a straight red by referee Martin Atkinson after handling outside his area at Anfield.

Adrian came on to replace the Liverpool No.1, as he did in his absence earlier this season.

But the suspension comes at the worst possible time for the Premier League leaders as they embark on a hectic fixture schedule.

Alisson will now be suspended for the midweek visit of Everton in the Merseyside derby.

Adrian was almost immediately caught out by Lewis Dunk, who got Brighton back in the match after an early Virgil van Dijk brace.

On the red card, Klopp said: "I think it was handball but I haven't seen it. There was no offside and then it is a tricky situation.

"He wanted 100% to head the ball but the other player got there earlier so we can't change that. Virgil [van Dijk] was probably man of the match with the two goals but Adrian is for me - to come in to a game like this and make two saves."

Liverpool are already without Fabinho until the new year after the Brazilian midfielder suffered an ankle injury.

Jurgen Klopp confirmed the Brazilian midfielder was out around six weeks with defender Joel Matip also an injury concern.

Liverpool face a hectic run of nine matches in December in as many as four different competitions.

They take on Leicester and Wolves in the Premier League after their Club World Cup trip to Qatar.

The Reds will play in the Carabao Cup 24 hours before the semi-final of the Club World Cup but Klopp has confirmed the Under-23s are set to feature.
