Alisson's challenge to Liverpool team-mates ahead of "intense" title-race moment

Alisson believes the festive period is an "intense moment" for Liverpool's season as they attempt to keep pace with rivals Manchester City.

The Reds are in the midst of a three-horse title race and sit second behind the defending champions.

The period between Christmas and New Year can often be defining with plenty of points on offer during a short period.

Liverpool had their Boxing Day clash with Leeds postponed due to a Covid outbreak but will play Chelsea in early January in what will be a crucial clash.

Alisson knows how often it is to keep picking up the wins with their next game a difficult trip to Leicester City.

“Yeah, it’s a really intense moment now and everybody knows how important this moment is for the rest of the season,” he told the club's website.

“Can you keep consistency? Can you keep winning these short games that we have, in terms of intervals between each other?

“So it’s really important for us if you look at the table, but we cannot change our focus, we just need to be focused on the next challenge, playing game by game.

"This is what we’ll do and think on the next challenge.”

Liverpool were in contention at this stage last season before they fell away.

Now, with a fully fit squad to call upon, Jurgen Klopp's side are aiming to regain their Premier League title.

The Reds have won 12 of their 18 league games with their only loss coming in October at West Ham.

They are also into the last four of the Carabao Cup following a dramatic shootout with over Leicester City and marched into the last 16 of the Champions League after winning all six of their group games.

Alisson has been impressed with his team's efforts thus far but is adamant improvements can be made.

“So far really good. I believe we are doing a great job here, all the team good performances,” added the Brazilian.

“This period of the season is a really intense period and it’s really a mentality game. It’s really tough, physically speaking, but I believe that we are doing really well with these situations, having the results that we need.

"But we still have a lot of things to improve, to keep improving through the season but I’m happy about what we did so far.”

Alisson is into his fourth year at Anfield and has largely only known success having been one of the catalysts for their upward rise.
