Alisson Becker, Thiago Alcantara and Joel Matip get chance to prove fitness ahead of Liverpool's clash with Sheffield United

Jurgen Klopp will give Alisson Becker, Thiago Alcantara and Joel Matip every chance of being available for Liverpool this weekend.

The Reds entertain Sheffield United on Saturday evening in the Premier League having earned a morale-boosting 1-0 Champions League win at Ajax in midweek.

Both Thiago and Matip were absent after sustaining knee and leg muscle problems respectively during last weekend’s 2-2 draw at Everton.

Long-term absentees Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Virgil van Dijk are joined on the sidelines by Kostas Tsimikas, who is expected to resume training next week.

But Klopp will wait until after Friday afternoon’s session at Melwood before determining who is in contention for the visit of the Blades.

“Apart from Ox and Virg and maybe Kostas, who gets closer and closer but is not at all in contention for this game or the next one, all the others we have to see day by day, pretty much,” said the Reds boss.

“There are a lot of conversations with the medical department about who it makes sense (to play) and for who it is too early.

“That’s the time we are in with the games we have. If somebody is injured for two weeks that could mean being out for five games even if it’s not a serious injury.

“I don’t know at this moment who will be available. My last information is the boys who played the other night are all fine, they are okay. The rest we will see.”

It also means Alisson, who was training individually at the start of the week, may have an outside chance of returning from the shoulder injury that has ruled him out for the last three games.

And asked specifically on Thiago and Matip, Klopp said on Friday: “I don’t know. We will have training after the press conference so we will see who is out there.

“You can only be in contention if you are in training.

“In my situation, I don’t want to rule anybody out until somebody tells me and so far nobody told me. For me, everybody but the three I mentioned are in contention until somebody tells me something different.”
