Alisson Becker boost for Liverpool as keeper set to sit out Brazil game

Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker is expected to sit out Brazil's match with Venezuela on Saturday.

The Reds' shot-stopper missed the last round of international fixtures after suffering a shoulder injury at the beginning of October, but was drafted back into the Selecao squad by head coach Tite for November's games.

Brazil host Venezuela in the early hours of Saturday morning but are likely to do so with Alisson as part of the substitutes' bench.

Tite also has Manchester City's Ederson and Palmeiras 'keeper Weverton to choose from and the coach has hinted that Alisson will be given a watching brief for the game in Sao Paulo.

"We have three great goalkeepers," Tite said. "Weverton played last time and comes in after a good sequence at Palmeiras.

"He played two very good games. I spoke with the three of them personally, together with [goalkeeper coach Claudio] Taffarel.

"Alisson is an excellent goalkeeper. We have Ederson, who is experiencing a great technical and physical moment."

The news will come as a welcome one inside the Liverpool camp given the injury list that continues to mount at Anfield.

Alisson has already missed a handful of fixtures this season and manager Jurgen Klopp is without three of what many would consider his first-choice back four in Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Fabinho, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Thiago Alcantara also remain sidelined at present forcing the trio to miss this round of international matches.

The Brazilians were given a scare earlier this week when defender Gabriel Menino tested positive for COVID-19 before being sent home to self-isolate.

However, Brazil doctor Rodrigo Lasmar explained that the rest of the contingent tested negative, including Reds duo Roberto Firmino and Alisson.

Dr Lasmar said: "In the tests carried out yesterday, Gabriel Menino tested positive for COVID-19. All other players in the group tested negative.

"It is important to note that, on Monday, when the players arrived, all members of the delegation were tested and the results were negative.

"We have already informed the medical department of Palmeiras. The player is asymptomatic, is already isolated and has been cut from the squad.

"All protective measures are being taken. We will perform a new round of tests before our trip to Uruguay, after the game [against Venezuela].

"The doctor will speed up the other tests. In the meantime there is no problem for us to play. Roughly speaking, the information given to us - for all players and coaching staff - was that."
