Alison Hammond under fire over Prince Philip comment on This Morning

Alison Hammond has found herself under fire from This Morning viewers following a comment which some branded 'rude and insensitive'.

The presenter was back fronting the ITV show alongside Dermot O'Leary has Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield continued their Easter break.

The pair stayed on the theme of most programmes over the weekend by paying tribute to the Duke of Edinburgh.

Prince Phillip died "peacefully" at Windsor Castle on Friday morning (April 9), Buckingham Palace announced.

This Morning was cut off air around midday as the news of the 99-year-old's death broke.

Eamonn Holmes and Ruth Langsford were interviewing Coronation Street's Alan Halsall when Eamonn interrupted and said there was "some very, very important news," before cutting to ITV News with Lucrezia Millarini.

But back to Monday's show, The Telepraph's Camilla Tominey and broadcaster Matthew Wright joined Alison and Dermot as they discussed the news headlines a paid further tribute to the duke.

However, Alison upset some viewers when she made the comment 'we were expecting him to die,' during the show's opening segment.

One fumed: "Alison Hammond saying within the first minute ‘I know we were expecting him to die’. How incredibly rude and insensitive. Eamonn or Ruth would of handled this which the upmost professionalism. I’ve had to turn off. Simply terrible. Shame on you #ThisMorning Bring Back E&R."

"'I know we were expecting him to die and everything like that?!' I am sorry but how rude & unprofessional is that comment?! #thismorning," another argued.

A third commented: "I was no fan of Prince Philip to say the least but even I thought that was all a bit crass. 'Expecting him to die'."

"Not watching this s*** show any longer. Alison: 'We were expecting him to die?' #WTF How professional!!!!!! Have a great morning all! #ThisMorning," a fourth raged.
