Alison Hammond's Back To School leaves fans in tears over poignant tribute to Walter Tull

Viewers were left in tears this evening watching Alison Hammond's new ITV documentary Back To School as she explored instrumental black figures who have been hidden in Britain's history.

One poignant moment saw her visit Tottenham Hotspur's stadium with the great-nephew of Walter Tull, one of the first black professional football players in the UK.

Walter had signed for Spurs when he was 21 in 1909 and later moved to Northampton Town.

However, he gave up his football career to enlist in the British Army for the First World War.

He became the first black British officer in World War I and had been recommended for the military cross.

Tull suffered from shell shock when he returned but later died in March 1918 when he went back out to serve in The Somme.

Meeting his great-nephew Ed, Alison took him to the stadium after hearing about his heroic past.

He was surprised by Spurs midfielder Dele Alli, who presented him with a signed shirt and his great-uncle's name on the back.

"Ed this is for you," Dele said. "The Tottenham motto here is 'To Dare Is To Do'. We believe Walter embodied everything is about."

There was another surprise as the club played a video dedicated to Walter on the big screen.

"Walter Died at The Somme fighting for his country. A true hero," it read.

And fans were in tears and took to Twitter to comment.

One tweeted: "#alisonbacktoschool the story of Walter Tull has made me cry, what a truly amazing man he was."

While another commented: "I'm not crying... I'm not crying... okay I'm crying... Walter Tull RIP Red heart @AlisonHammond #AlisonBackToSchool."

A third wrote: "Omg I teared up there. God bless Walter Tull. #AlisonBackToSchool."

"Programmes like this are so important, I only left school 5 and half years ago but I never got taught about any black figures in history! So many interesting stories #AlisonBackToSchool #BlackHistoryMonth @AlisonHammond," another commented.
