Alison Hammond begs 'leave Prince Harry alone' as he grieves for grandad Prince Philip

This Morning host Alison Hammond has made an impassioned plea to the British public to "leave Prince Harry alone" as he grieves for his grandfather, the Duke of Edinburgh.

She was discussing Harry and his brother Prince William's very different statements about Prince Philip's death, with co host Dermot O'Leary, Vanessa Feltz and Tom Swarbrick.

Dermot said: "William and Harry paid tribute to Prince Philip, obviously in two very different ways, the Duke of Cambridge released a statement praising the Duke's lifetime of service to Queen, country and Commonwealth.

"Harry released his half an hour later with a contrasting statement, a master of the barbecue and a legend of banter.

"I suppose they are always going to be different."

Vanessa said: "They are two different people, why shouldn't they have two different statements? You don't have to make one unified statement about their personal grandpa.

"Everybody knows the family has unique relationships with each family member, William is more measured and formal, Harry is more reverent, both delightful.

"You can tell they will miss him very much indeed, and he was obviously a terrific grandpa."

Alison asked: "Lots of eyes are on William and Harry at the moment, do we need to be worrying about William and Harry and their relationship?"

Tom replied: "The 'legend of banter' stuff is a bit discordant with the national mood and the sombre way people are responding to it, but it's his grandfather, it's his grief, so even if it is a bit like what a teenager might say, actually it's his relationship, let's back off."

Alison remarked: "I feel like whatever Harry says now, he is going to be criticised, and I think it's so unfair.

"Leave him alone, he's just lost his grandad, leave him alone."

The conversation then turned to the Queen, who is now a widow, as Alison said: "She is not going to be alone, all the Royals are rallying around her and they will walk with her, I am so happy about that, I don't want her to be alone."

Vanessa replied: "I know, and actually lots of people will think about their own widowed mothers, or grandmothers, and think how lonely life is when you've lost a spouse of 73 years, imagine it.

"But she is not going to be alone and that is hugely cheering, she's got Princess Anne at one hand, she's got Sophie Wessex at the other, what about how she has bonded with her daughter-in-law?

"They could write a book about how to actually be friends with your mother-in-law, which most people would be happy to buy! I know I could've done with it!

"They really love each other, they go riding together, they watch old movies, it's lovely to think of them as actual friends, and she's got her ladies in waiting, Pamela Hicks, and Prince Charles is going to be there too."
