Aligarh Muslim University students demand release of clerics held for ‘conversions’

AGRA: Scores of students of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) on Friday took out a protest march against what they alleged targeting of people of the minority community and demanded release of clerics arrested on charges of illegal religious conversions.

The students demanded release of Maulana Kaleem Siddiqui, Maulana Umar Gautam and Mufti Jahangir Qasmi -- all accused of being part of alleged conversion racket by UP Police.

In a memorandum addressed to the President of India, the students also alleged that people of the minority community were being targeted in Assam too.

“If these demands are not met, we are afraid that it will disturb peace,” the memorandum read.
