Alieu's delighted dad say a heartfelt thank you to the people of Lanarkshire

The father of the young African boy who recently received the gift of hearing thanks to a Lanarkshire charity has said a heartfelt thank you.

Muhammed Cham, who was born with no ears and attends St John’s School for the Deaf in the Serrekunda region, travelled to Scotland in February with the founders of Project Gambia: People Feeding People.

The 14-year-old, also known as Alieu, was brought over at the expense of the charity to undergo life-changing surgery at University Hospital Wishaw.

Alieu popped into the Advertiser office in Hamilton to say thank you whilst in Scotland (Hamilton Advertiser)

Now having had a specialist implant fitted to enable him to hear, Alieu has returned home to his joyful parents.

After being reunited with his son last week, Alieu’s delighted dad Mybe Cham said: “A huge everlasting thanks to the good people of Scotland and elsewhere who supported Project Gambia’s efforts to get our wee boy over to Scotland.

“A life-changing event for Alieu and already we have noticed a more confident, talkative, responsive and articulate young man has returned.

“A young man who will now be attending a mainstream school. Thank you all again.”

Project Gambia co-founder Paul Lafferty, who looked after Alieu during his stay, said: “Thank you to this wonderful man and his wonderful family who placed their faith in the volunteer aid workers of Project Gambia to get things done for Alieu.”

Fellow aid worker and co-founder Frank Devine added: “Project Gambia volunteers are now home from West Africa after a hugely eventful two weeks.

“As well as returning Alieu into the safe keeping of his mother and father, our aid workers were joined by NHS Lanarkshire ear, nose and throat consultant/surgeon Arunachalam Iyer, who carried out vital hearing/health checks with pupils at St John’s School for the Deaf.”
