Alice Springs police officer allegedly assaulted while trying to arrest woman

It is alleged the police officer was assaulted at Anzac Hill in Alice Springs.

A police officer was allegedly assaulted in Alice Springs overnight after she and other officers tried to seize alcohol off a large group at Anzac Hill.

It is alleged a female officer was attacked by a 22-year-old woman who clawed at her face and pulled out chunks of hair at 2:00am on Saturday.

Another woman tried to attack officers with a type of wooden club known as a nulla nulla and had capsicum spray used on her.

It is the second attack on Alice Springs police officers in a week, but police believe it does not represent an increase in violence towards police.

"This happens all too often to police, not only in Alice Springs but throughout the Territory, so its just one of those things that goes with the job unfortunately, Alice Springs Watch Commander Michael Milde said.

"It shouldn't, but it does. A lot of people don't have respect for the police or their own community."

Police said the female officer was released from Alice Springs Hospital with cuts to the inside of her mouth, bruising and scratches to her eye.

"The officer has got scratches inside her mouth after the female attempted to get her fingers inside her mouth and rip into her cheeks, she's obviously quite distressed about that whole incident, Watch Commander Milde said.

"Obviously there are a lot of people in Alice Springs who do respect police, but there's the few that don't and they always seem to stand out."

The two alleged attackers remain in police custody and will be interviewed on Saturday afternoon.
