Alice Springs detention centre guards assaulted

The centre was evacuated following the assault.

Two guards at Alice Springs Youth Detention Centre were hospitalised after an assault at the centre overnight.

One youth justice officer sustained facial injuries, while the other had bruising and soreness to the body.

Territory Duty Manager for St John Ambulance Craig Garraway said the corrections officers had been taken to Alice Springs Hospital by ambulance.

"Both prison officers had non-life-threatening injuries and were in a stable condition," Mr Garraway said.

No detainees were injured during the incident.

In a statement, the Department of Territory Families confirmed the centre had been evacuated following the assault, with 14 detainees transported to the police watch house.

The centre's infrastructure was damaged during the incident, but the detainees have now been returned.

It is understood three youths being investigated for the assault will now be transferred to Don Dale Youth Detention Centre in Darwin, which is a more secure facility.

A spokesperson for the Minister for Territory Families' Dale Wakefield confirmed the matter had been referred to police, and that three youths were being investigated.

"The young people in youth detention centres have complex behaviours and incidents do occur, which are managed professionally as part of centre operations," Ms Wakefield said.

"The safety and wellbeing of young people and staff in youth detention centres is paramount."

The incident comes as the union representing youth justice officers claim a crisis has redeveloped within the NT's youth detention system.

The Government has asserted detention incidents are reducing overall.
