Alicante airport fire: Passengers face second day of travel delays as blaze grounds flights

Passengers face a second day of travel chaos in the Costa Blanca today as Alicante airport remains closed following a fire.

Alicante-Elche Airport is set to remain shut until at least 2pm after a blaze ripped through a terminal roof on Wednesday.

Flyers were evacuated from the popular Spanish travel hub just after 2.30pm yesterday when flames and plumes of black smoke engulfed the building.

Dozens of firefighters are still tackling the fire, thought to have started in the terminal, with some on Twitter reporting a lack of information on the ground and not "a single alarm going off".

More than half of the 125 flights scheduled to arrive or leave Alicante were either re-routed or cancelled yesterday, with passengers on 14 ferried by bus to Murcia and Valencia and more than 20 diverted in mid-air.

The airport has told holidaymakers to stay away from the area and contact their airline.
