Alicante Airport evacuated after fire breaks out in terminal building

A fire has broken out at Alicante Airport causing planes to be evacuated and flights to be diverted.

Travellers are facing severe delays to their journeys as planes are unable to land, the Mirror reports.

Firefighters are at the airport but no injuries are being reported.

Local reports say the blaze broke out in offices near the departures area in the terminal building at 1.30pm local time.

A spokesman for Spanish airport operator AENA said two planes had been diverted to nearby airports in Valencia and Murcia.

A spokesman said: “The fire at Alicante-Elche Airport is under control.”

An hour earlier AENA said: “For security reasons the airport is being evacuated.

"At this moment in time it is not admitting any air traffic.”

On Twitter, Sotiri Dimpinoudis wrote: "A large fire happening at the airport of Alicante in Spain, has the airport being evacuated and flight to be delayed and arrivals being diverted."

Alicante-Elche Airport is one of the main routes to Benidorm with some flights serving Newcastle International Airport.

As of 3pm Spanish website Diarioinformacion reported firefighters had extinguished the blaze.

While AENA claims departing traffic is now back to normal at the airport.

But arriving planes will still not be allowed to land for sometime.

Hundreds of holidaymakers and staff are thought to have been evacuated after the blaze broke out, although an AENA official was unable to give an exact number.

A spokesman for the airport operator confirmed part of the roof of the terminal had caught fire, although the blaze is said to have originated in offices below.

The alarm was sounded around 2.30pm local time.

AENA said shortly after 3pm it was hoping to start getting passengers back on flights again shortly.
