An Algerian has been arrested on theft charges as he was returning to Thailand at Suvarnabhumi airport on Sunday.

Suvarnabhumi airport police said on Monday Lamine Cherif, 37, was caught at the immigration area for arrivals as he was preparing to go through the process.

Mr Cherif was on an arrest warrant issued by the Samut Prakan Court last year on charges of stealing 25,000 baht in cash from a British tourist at a restaurant on the third floor of Suvarnabhumi in August last year.

The Briton, whose name was not disclosed, lodged a complaint to the police and the footage of CCTVs checked by investigators caught Mr Cherif red-handed.

Police found that he had left the country and blacklisted him.

Police said they were alerted that the suspect would return to Thailand at the airport on Sunday and kept looking for him until he appeared at the immigration area.

Mr Cherif denied any knowledge of the crime.
