There have been 74 confirmed cholera cases in Algeria since the start of the outbreak early last month, the health ministry announced on Friday.

Until August 30, 74 cholera cases were recorded, the ministry said in a statement, adding that 132 patients were discharged from hospital after recovering.

Cholera is now confined to one of six areas originally affected.

"The epidemic is now limited to the Blida" area located around 50 kilometers south of Algiers, where there have been 39 cases, the ministry said.

In the capital, cholera cases reached 15 in areas that lie at proximity to Algiers, according to the Boufarik hospital director.

In Tipaza, there was a similar number of cases. There were 3 cases in Bouria, one in Medea and Ain Defla each.

The health ministry said that the patients in Medea and Ain Defla were infected during a visit to Blida.

The cholera outbreak, Algeria's first in 22 years, has killed two patients at Boufarik hospital.

Cholera is transmitted through infected faecal matter, often via contaminated water or food.

It causes acute watery diarrhea and vomiting, causing dehydration that if left untreated can lead to death.
