Algeria’s Workers' Party Boycotts Elections

Ramdane-Youssef Tazibt, an official at Algeria’s Workers' Party, affirmed Saturday that the left-wing party will not present a presidential candidate on April 18, which is unprecedented in the history of this party.

Tazibt told AFP that all members of the central committee voted in favor of nonparticipating, except for two members who abstained from voting.

“It is the party’s duty to take into consideration the revolutionary path of the country. There are millions of Algerians demanding the departure of this system, and this presidential election can’t respond to this real aspiration to change,” he said.

Other than Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika who has revealed an intention to run for a fifth term, no other candidate has confirmed his nomination.

Algeria's Abderrazak Makri, head of the Social Movement for Peace (MSP) and the announced candidate for next presidential elections, said that it is likely to reconsider his nomination and a final decision will be taken on Sunday.

As for the Algerian opposition that has been absent from the opposition movement that spurred from the social media, it vainly tried to present one candidate for elections.

In this context, Ali Benflis – Bouteflika’s rival in elections of 2004-2014 – will reach a final decision whether to run for the presidency or not on Sunday. Retired General Ali Ghadiri – who entered the political world in 2018 and promised to establish a ‘second republic’- has already announced his candidacy.

After the completion of submitting the candidacy files, the Constitutional Council will consider their qualifications within ten days.
