- Protests erupted in mid-February after the ailing Bouteflika announced he would seek a fifth term in office. The 82-year-old president has rarely been seen in public since suffering a stroke in 2013.
- As the demonstrations gained momentum and became weekly Friday protests, Bouteflika sought to quell the anger on March 11 by announcing he was dropping his bid for another term and that April elections would be postponed. The move failed to appease protesters, however, who saw them as a ploy to extend his two decades in power by other means.
- Bouteflika went a step further on Monday, saying he would leave the presidency on April 28, at the end of his current mandate.
