Algeria’s Bensalah Authorizes Army Reshuffle

Algerian interim President Abdelkader Bensalah, DW

Algerian interim President Abdelkader Bensalah has spearheaded a bold shake-up of the country’s defense and justice ministries.

According to an official decree released on Wednesday, presidential orders included ending the tenure of Army leader General-Major Hadji Zerhouni and replacing him by General-Major Mustapha Oudjani.

Bensalah also appointed Brig. Gen. Ahmed Saoudi as the central director of military facilities at the Ministry of National Defense, one of the most prominent army branches.

Colonel Ahsan Ghorabi was also removed from his post as Secretary-General of a joint follow-up ministerial committee and was replaced by Colonel Hussein Jalil as his successor.

The changes also included the appointment of Colonel Abdel Quddous Halaymiyeh as Military Attorney General to the Military Appeals Board in Bouargla, replacing Colonel Farid Tawil.

Tawil, in turn, was appointed military prosecutor to the Military Appeals Board of Oran, which enjoys jurisdiction over Algeria's western border with Morocco.

Since his appointment as the country's interim President, succeeding the outgoing President Abdelaziz Bouteflika, Bensalah has led a series of changes in public institutions such as the army, local administrations, and judiciary.
