Algeria Appoints New External Security Director

Algeria’s Chief of Staff, Lieutenant General Said Chengriha (Reuters)

Algeria’s Chief of Staff, Lieutenant General Said Chengriha called on members of the external security and documentation directorate to “obey the orders” of the new Director-General, Major General Noureddine Mokri.

Mokri assumed his position on Wednesday, replacing Major General Mohamed Bouzit who was dismissed two weeks ago after his failure to manage several issues, notably the dangerous situation in Libya and its repercussions on national security.

Ministry of National Defense issued a statement indicating that Chengriha supervised the installation ceremony of Mokri in his capacity and on behalf of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune,

Chengriha addressed the directorate staff, ordering them to exert more efforts in serving Algeria and protecting its higher interests.

He urged them to rally around the new director and support him in performing his duties, through full and adequate compliance in order to carry out the tasks assigned to each one of them.

Little is known about the new intelligence officer, except that he previously served as a military attaché in several diplomatic missions. He also studied in several Russian and western military institutions at the beginning of his career.

Meanwhile, the President underwent Wednesday a successful surgery on his foot at a hospital in Germany, according to the presidency.

The statement said that Tebboune will return to Algeria, as soon as doctors clear him to travel and his medical condition permits.

Tebboune, 75, has flown to Germany on January 10 to be treated for complications resulting from a previous coronavirus infection.
