Algee Smith hails 'giving and caring' James Van Der Beek

James Van Der Beek died aged 48

James Van Der Beek was a "great leader on set", according to Algee Smith.

The Dawson's Creek star passed away on February 11, aged 48, and Algee has now opened up about his experience of working with James on The Gates, their new horror movie.

Algee, 31, told Extra: "I just want to send love to James’ family and to James … He was just such a great leader on set. We all just absorbed and learned from him so much and he was so giving and caring.

"He invited us into his RV that he drove down from Austin … He wasn’t staying in a regular hotel. He chose to stay in there. He just invited us in and he just had multiple conversations with us and that those are things that I’ll cherish forever.

"But, you know, I’m very happy that we get to honour him and releasing this film and standing side by side for him for his family."

James' family launched a GoFundMe page after the actor passed away, and they've already received more than $2.5 million in donations.

The page reads: "James Van Der Beek was a beloved husband, father, and friend who touched the lives of everyone around him. After a long and courageous battle with cancer, James passed away on February 11, 2026 leaving behind his devoted wife, Kimberly, and their six wonderful children. Throughout his illness, the family faced not only emotional challenges but also significant financial strain as they did everything possible to support James and provide for his care.

"In the wake of this loss, Kimberly and the children are facing an uncertain future. The costs of James’s medical care and the extended fight against cancer have left the family out of funds. They are working hard to stay in their home and to ensure the children can continue their education and maintain some stability during this incredibly difficult time. The support of friends, family, and the wider community will make a world of difference as they navigate the road ahead.

"Your generosity will help cover essential living expenses, pay bills, and support the children’s education. Every donation, no matter the size, will help Kimberly and her family find hope and security as they rebuild their lives. Thank you for considering a gift to support them."
