Alfredo Morelos wanted by Pedro Caixinha as Rangers flop targets striker for Cruz Azul

Alfredo Morelos has emerged as a shock transfer target for Pedro Caixinha at Cruz Azul.

The flop former Rangers boss could be set to make a sensational move to sign the Colombian who he took to Rangers two years ago.

Morelos netted 30 goals last season for Rangers, but was sent off on five occasions and he faces an uncertain future at Ibrox.

Rangers last season placed a £20m price tag on their prize asset.

And ambitious Mexico City side Cruz Azul - managed by Caixinha - have targeted the controversial international forward.

Caixinha has been backed by Cruz Azul financially as they desperately try to end a 21-year title drought in the Central American country.

He's won the Copa Mexico and lost a title play-off, but the Portuguese manager is desperate to finally win the league.

And he revealed he's been given the green light to sign a striker by his board.

Caixinha said: "We have a very good squad here. We have a base of 16 Mexicans and seven foreigners and we all speak the same language.

"But the squad is not yet complete. We are in the market for one more striker and we are actively looking to bring a new player in.

"Last season, our main weakness was a lack of goals. Ideally, I'd love to add a player who can guarantee us goals.

"This season our objective is to win everything."

Cruz Azul have not been shy recently in their transfer activities and have forked out £10 million for Orbelin Pineda, £6 million for Juan Escobar and a further £6 million for Milton Caraglio in the past year.

And they have set their sights on Morelos, who was dropped from Colombia's Copa American squad because of a lack of playing time at Rangers due to suspensions.

Caixinha plucked Morelos from Finnish football two years ago when he signed him from HJK Helsinki, but he couldn't save him from the sack in Scotland.

Now he appears keen to link up with Morelos again in Mexico City.
