Alfredo Morelos snubbed as Lille captain reveals Rangers star's place in transfer pecking order

Lille captain Jose Fonte has declared Jonathan David was the striker signing his side truly "wanted".

The Ligue 1 side were heavily linked with a move for Rangers' Colombian striker Alfredo Morelos and were reported to have bid as much as £18m for the striker, with personal terms already agreed.

As the speculation mounted, Steven Gerrard said the player's head had been "turned" over the interest in the big spending club who have an incredible track record in selling their stars to football's elite.

But Rangers have stated they rate the marksman in the £20m bracket and appear determined to resist bids below that ceiling.

And 36-year-old defensive leader Fonte believes the club have snared their number one target in £27m Canadian striker Jonathan David.

He told talkSPORT: "To be honest I think we are in good shape. We got the striker that we wanted in Jonathan David.

"We got the Turkish strker Burak Yilmaz. We have one or two young boys who have been with us a few years so in that aspect I think we are okay.

"So if another one comes and he brings the level up then we will be happy with that but I'm quite comfortable with the squad we have at the moment.

"There might be one or two exits and some other players coming in but at the moment I'm happy."

Speaking in late July Lille president Gerard Lopez made it clear Ibrox hitman Morelos was a key target.

Lopez told French TV station RMC Sport: “It is not rare that we have agreements with two or even three players for one position and then we look at which player combines better with another.

“Morelos, it’s true that he’s a player that interests us. It’s also true that he is interested in LOSC. But we are in full discussion, nothing is done.”
