Alfredo Morelos should be shown Rangers red card as Hotline callers back Graeme Souness stance

Former Rangers manager Graeme Souness reckons his old side need to cut their losses and punt Alfredo Morelos after the red mist descended on the striker against Hibs again. Current boss Gio van Bronckhorst has already jettisoned the player from his squad for the Champions League qualifier against PSV Eindhoven.

Now Hotline callers reckon it’s time up at Ibrox for the man who holds the dubious honour of being the most sent off Gers player in history with eight red cards. Morelos’ latest misdemeanour even managed to take some of the Hotline heat off referee Willie Collum after the explosive Easter Road draw. Some, but not all.

Stephen Johnstone, Ardentinny, said: “It’s time to give Alfredo Morelos the red card as he will cost Rangers points and leave them lagging behind Celtic for seasons to come. He has become a liability and I can’t see anyone wanting to buy him.”

Andrew Lamb, Fraserburgh, added: “I couldn't agree more with Souness regarding his views on Morelos. Selling him is long overdue and I'd ask for £8 million but go as low as £6m just to get rid of him. He can’t be trusted.”

Paddy Gowans emailed: “Morelos’ record is appalling. Sent off eight times, he's not a good advert for Scottish football. Rangers should cash in now before they get peanuts for him.”

Paul McArdle, Gourock, said: “Morelos swung a wild kick at a Hibs player off the ball minutes before his dangerous elbow smash and should be hauled up in front of the beaks for both. He's the dirtiest player in Scotland.”

Meanwhile, Jamie Thompson, Clydebank, said: “I’m not convinced that Gio van Bronckhorst has a strong enough team to win the league. The defence is not good enough then they have Morelos who costs them so many games. It’s time for the manager to make the important decision to sell him and spend the money on another good number nine.”

Not a lot of backing for Morelos then. Not surprisingly it’s the same story for our officials.

Wullie Graham, Bristol, said: “Two identical incidents at the weekend showed the difference between a league with VAR and another with a joke referee. Kieran Trippier sent off, then after VAR looked at the offence, it was rightly reduced to a yellow card. Easter Road on Saturday had a different outcome with John Lundstram sent for an early bath. No wonder English people call the SPFL a laughing stock. As a Hearts fan I have seen Willie Collum ruin matches with his red card happy antics. He should never referee in the top league again.”

Chris Lowe, Yoker, added: “Only four weeks gone but It looks like a repeat of last season is on the cards with the same gang of officials who were instrumental in Celtic winning the title carrying on where they left off. Game changing decisions going against Rangers on a weekly basis and cards thrown about like confetti towards our team. VAR can’t come soon enough.”

Alan Flett doesn’t agree though. He emailed: “The people who think VAR will put an end to poor refereeing decisions are deluded. English football has been using VAR for the last 2-3 years and their match officials are still getting decisions wrong on a weekly basis. Our referees will be no different! Rangers didn’t lose the league title because there was no VAR, we lost it because we dropped points in games that we should've won.”

Gerry Kelly emailed: “Rangers fans and the club just constantly moan. They’re just never happy until they win. See if you want to moan why not moan at your so-called star striker who is nothing but a liability?”

Finally John Scott, Grassmoor, called in to support Collum. He said: “For the love of God give Willie Collum a break. You would think he nicked a tenner out of a pub’s charity box. The fact that so called pundits are split over his decisions in the Hibs-Rangers game speaks volumes.

"My humble opinion is Lundstram deserved a red. He lost control of the ball to Boyle then cynically chased after him and pulled him down. So Collum is inconsistent? Well that puts him up there with about 90 per cent of players in the Scottish league.”

Are we witnessing the final days of Alfredo Morelos as a Rangers player?
