Alfredo Morelos scores as Rangers return to action with friendly win over Hamilton

Rangers returned to action for the first time since March as they secured a 2-1 win over Hamilton in a closed doors friendly.

The Gers were the last Scottish team to play a competitive match, losing 3-1 to Bayer Leverkusen in the first leg of their Europa League last 16 tie on March 12.

The next day it was announced that the sport was shutting down, with the SPFL season later declared over on a points-per-game basis.

The Premiership will return on August 1, and Rangers still have their second leg against Leverkusen to play on August 5.

After the Scottish Government gave the green light for matches to return, Steven Gerrard 's side took on Accies at their Auchenhowie training base.

Steven Davis, Ryan Jack, Allan McGregor, Filip Helander and Nathan Patterson all sat out the match with injuries, but new signings Calvin Bassey and Jon McLaughlin made their first appearances for the club.

The latter was beaten after just eight minutes though when Ronan Hughes put Hamilton ahead.

Bassey marked his debut with a goal though, powering a James Tavernier header past Ryan Fulton to get his side back on level terms.

There was no surprise over who got the eventual winner, with Alfredo Morelos converting a late penalty after being fouled by Markus Fjortoft.

Gers will continue their preparations with a mini-tournament in France as they look to go into the opening game of the season away at Aberdeen in top condition.
