Alfredo Morelos receives rapturous Rangers reception after making return from suspension

Alfredo Morelos made his long-awaited return to action after suspension with a cameo appearance for Rangers in the 1-0 win against Hibs.

And the Colombian received a rapturous reception as he climbed off the bench to replace Jermain Defoe with 16 minutes of the contest remaining.

Morelos hasn't featured since the explosive derby defeat to Celtic in March when his first half red card contributed to a 2-1 loss that ended the Ibrox club's hopes of title success.

It was the 22-year-old's fifth red card of a tempestuous season which incredibly also sees him lead the Premiership goalscoring charts with 29 strikes.

Rangers supporters stood to welcome their hero back into the fray and chanted his name as he replaced Defoe who had earlier given his side the lead.

He even managed to find the net, although his 86th minute strike was rightly ruled out for offside.

However it looks like the striker faces a fight to reclaim his starting slot ahead of next week's derby clash with Celtic.

Steven Gerrard warned him last week that Defoe was now in command of the number nine shirt after an impressive run of form in Morelos' absence.

He said: "There's a challenge there now. There's a player playing with high confidence, creating chances and scoring goals. That's the way Rangers should be, we should have options in that area - especially this area."

Defoe's goal in Sunday's clash with Hibs was his eighth for Rangers and the former England striker has formed a clinical partnership with Scott Arfield and Ryan Kent in attack.
