Alfredo Morelos' Rangers red card makes Colombian headlines as striker 'isn't forgiven anything in Scotland'

Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos was sent off as his side beat Motherwell this afternoon, his first dismissal of the season.

The 23-year-old saw red five times in 2018-19 - though one was later rescinded - but had improved his discipline immensely this term.

His sending off was a big topic of debate in Scotland but it also generated headlines in his native Colombia.

El Bufalo has been capped seven times by his country, scoring once, and the nation's media keep a keen eye on his progress.

The Colombian edition of Marca lamented: "Alfredo Morelos isn't forgiven anything in Scotland.

Depor's headline said simply "what have you done, Alfredo?", while noting that El Bufalo had scored in "a valuable win".

Newspaper El Tiempo felt the match showed two sides to Morelos "one a 'crack' and the other a childish player".

In the Colombian edition of AS it was pointed out that "once again Alfredo Morelos received insults" from fans, noting that Aberdeen fans received no punishment for their controversial banner about the striker.

On a similar note, Futbol Red pointed out that the Rangers star had gone 35 games without a red card before today's game.

Antena 2, on the other hand, called it "another embarrassing Morelos incident".

Gers manager Steven Gerrard refrained from criticising his player too harshly after the match.

He said: "It is a setback, he knows that, we know that.

“But let’s not forget how much of an improvement there has been,

“We will reset him and I’m sure he will be fine because he hates missing football matches.

“I’m sure he hates getting punished in the pocket so hopefully he will get back on the horse and continue to improve in that area.

“It’s the first setback he’s had after huge, huge improvements so we’ll reset that but we certainly have no complaints.

“Unfortunately, the supporters and his team-mates will suffer because he’s not available for the next game.”
