Alfredo Morelos in Colombia hope as Rangers star sees national team rival flounder in lengthy goal drought

Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos may well be back in the Colombia reckoning for the next international break as one of his striker rivals continued a year long dry streak with a horror miss.

El Bufalo has hit three goals in seven matches for the Premiership champions this season, but was not included in the latest squad for his national team.

While that would likely have been welcome news for Steven Gerrard, it's no secret that his star man has a deep love of representing his homeland.

There's plenty of competition in the Colombia squad, but the latest matches may well have bolstered Morelos' claim for inclusion.

While Duvan Zapata has a fine record for Serie A high-flyers Atalanta, the striker has not been able to take that form onto the international stage.

The forward has managed just four goals in 31 caps and hasn't found the back of the net for Colombia since netting against Venezuela in October 2020.

Zapata came in for criticism after missing a sitter in a 0-0 draw with Uruguay, and was defended publicly by Juventus star Juan Cuadrado.

Another 0-0 draw with Brazil on Sunday also failed to see him find the net despite three goals and three assists for his club so far this season.

Morelos has also struggled to translate his club for to country, with one goal in 11 caps, but with Radamel Falcao coming to the end of his career the Rangers man will hope to stake his claim as Zapata's dry streak continues.

The next international break falls in November, with fixtures against Brazil and Paraguay.

The Colombian side will face Ecuador on October 14 with Zapata looking to finally break his duck.
