Alfredo Morelos 'fancied' by Newcastle United as Steve Bruce hints at Rangers transfer KO

Newcastle United "fancy" a move for Alfredo Morelos to solve their striking woes.

But Toon boss Steve Bruce has hinted he may have already been knocked back by Rangers - and it's unlikely the Ibrox side would deal with Mike Ashley given the ongoing issues with the St James' Park chief.

Rangers have been involved in a bitter wrangle over a retail deal, with Dave King insisting the Sports Direct supremo has "bedevilled" the club.

However, the Daily Star report Bruce is keen to add a new option up top given £40million man Joelinton's continued struggles.

It's claimed he's identified Morelos and Jarrod Bowen from his former club Hull as potential options.

The 59-year-old admitted he's been unsuccessful over a couple of targets but continued to publicly back Joelinton, who has scored just one goal for the club.

Bruce said: "We've had a couple of knockbacks but will keep on working.

“To play for Newcastle is a heavy load.

“There is an expectation as the No. 9 and with his price tag, that bears on him.

“He is still only a kid and will learn from this. He will have to keep on with it and that's all I can ask.”

Steven Gerrard has repeatedly and categorically ruled out selling Morelos in the January window, a stance backed by outgoing Ibrox chief Dave King.

But that hasn't stopped rumours from swirling, with reports in Italy over the weekend linking Serie A side Bologna with a move.
