Alfredo Morelos defended by Rangers boss Steven Gerrard as he declares 'nothing else to say' verdict on elbow incident

Steven Gerrard doesn't believe Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos should have been shown a red card for his elbow on Mark Connolly.

The Ibrox side continued their relentless form with a 2-1 over Dundee United at Tannadice today to make it nine consecutive league wins.

However, a flash-point in the game came in the first half with the Colombian striker being shown a yellow card by whistler Steven McLean for a high elbow in the face of United man Connolly.

Pundits and former Rangers duo Ally McCoist and Kris Boyd both insisted Morelos should have been given his marching orders.

However, Gerrard played down the incident in his post-match interview feeling McLean dealt with the incident correctly at the time.

When asked if he breathed a sigh of relief over Morelos not being shown red, he told Sky Sports: "No, not really, I haven't looked at the incident back but I remember it in normal play and it was a foul and the referee has dealt with it with the yellow card. I don't think there is anything else to say on it."

Morelos has not netted a domestic goal since September and endured a frustrating afternoon in front of goal again during Rangers ' visit to Tayside.

The forward cut a frustrating figure as he was replaced by Cedric Itten after 70 minutes.

When asked if Morelos needs a goal to give him a boost, Gerrard said: "Well he doesn't do interviews, so I don't know and you don't know. He's working hard and getting chances, maybe his confidence is affected slightly, because that pass from Kemar Roofe normally he would take that on first time. If he keeps working hard and stays focused I'm sure his form will turn."

The Ibrox boss felt his side had "won ugly" thanks to a wonderful free-kick from James Tavernier and Connor Goldson, having been pegged back by Lewis Smith's strike for the hosts.

He went on: "It's another big win and you've got to come to places like this and show a different side to you and hopefully we'll look back on results like this and I'll be even prouder of them."

The gaffer also praised the sensational free-kcik from Tavernier, adding: "It doesn't matter who you are or who you play for, if you can execute a free kick like that into the top corner with that amount of dip it's a world class moment."
