Alfredo Morelos and the key Rangers transfer factor that could end Porto 'game of solitaire'

Rangers will reportedly hold firm on interest in Alfredo Morelos until after their Champions League group stage push.

The Rangers striker has been heavily linked with a move to Porto, with some outlets in Portugal claiming a deal was all but signed.

However, Record Sport understands that no official offer has been submitted and while his agent Michael Gorman travelled to the country, it was to finalise a move for Colombian international Yerson Mosquera’s move to Wolves.

The Premiership champions appear to be taking a firm stance on the interest from across Europe, with Cagliari also named as a potential suitor.

CM Journal claim that Steven Gerrard has shut down a move as he views Morelos as the key man in navigating the playoff route.

They state that "the 25-year-old is happy in Glasgow" but "would welcome a move to the blues and whites" if Rangers miss out on the group stage.

Porto are already guaranteed of a spot in the group stage, while Gerrard's men enter the competition in the third qualifying round.

Fellow Portuguese outlet Jornal de Notícias note that the push for the top level is the major stumbling block in the deal, with Rangers set to earn more from reaching the group stage than selling their talisman.

They state that Porto are "will continue to play a game of solitaire" to attempt to land the striker for €12million plus add ons towards the end of the window.

Rangers were in a similar a situation last season when Lille agreed terms but were unable to meet the club's asking price.
