Alfred Enoch on Young Vic's Tree: 'I can't learn choreography — I'm more of a Friday night dancer'

Tree star Alfred Enoch says his own dancing has improved because of his nightly performances.

The actor, who played Dean Thomas in the Harry Potter films, invites the audience up on stage to dance at the start and end of each show.

Enoch, who admitted he was “more of a Friday night dancer” than a professional, said he had not realised how much dancing was involved when he signed up: “My ability to learn choreography is nil — I like dancing and hearing music and doing what I feel but that’s it.”

He added: “My ability to repeat something someone does is next to zero so that’s something I’ve had to develop over the course of the show.”

Enoch said the nightclub feel of the show, about South Africa’s racial politics, had a “cathartic” effect on the cast because “you shake it off at the end of the show.”

Sinéad Cusack, who plays his white Afrikaans grandmother, praised the immersive nature of the show and said: “The audience are part of the action”.
