Alfie McCalmont signs loan deal with League Two side Oldham Athletic

Northern Ireland midfielder Alfie McCalmont has joined League Two side Oldham Athletic on a season long loan deal from Leeds United.

The 20-year-old finalised the deal with Harry Kewell’s side at Boundary Park on Friday and is eligible to make his debut at home to Crawley Town on Saturday.

He made his first team debut for Marcelo Bielsa's side in the Carabao Cup last season against Salford City before featuring in the next round against Stoke City.

The midfielder also made his first team debut for Northern Ireland in September last year against Luxembourg.

McCalmont signed a four-year deal at Leeds last month after impressing with the Under-23 squad but Bielsa feels he needs first team football to gain valuable experience.

Speaking to the Oldham website McCalmont said: I'm delighted to be here, it’s my first loan and I’m really looking forward to getting going for Oldham.

"I wanted to come here to prove myself and ultimately do well for the team."

He added: "I’m at that age now where I want to experience more senior football as it’ll help a lot in my career going forwards and this a great opportunity for me to put some good performances in.

"I’m that type of player that likes to find that vital pass in behind as well as getting forward to try and score some goals."

The Latics have lost their opening League Two games against Morecambe and Stevenage and currently sit 22nd in the table.

McCalmont will wear the number 25 shirt during his time at Boundary Park.
